Today’s feminized Western culture has declared war on masculinity.  To mention any fundamental differences between the sexes is not politically correct. Moreover, our boys are being pressured to be more like girls and subjected to a relentless assault upon their masculinity.

Postmodernity is peddling a disastrously feminized view of masculinity, surrendering men’s God-given roles to women and exalting a monosexualism that flies directly in the face of God’s purposes for creation.  There is a crying need in the church today to recover a biblical view of manhood. But we must be certain that our vision of what a man is called to be is reached through sound exegesis of the texts relating to masculinity.  Phillips’ excellent book provides that exegesis.

Studies reveal that 50-65 % of Christian men have significant problems with pornography and the problem is getting worse. Because most of the men in our churches are not equipped to battle lust from a grace-centric perspective, thousands are sliding down the steep slope towards pornography addiction.

All Christian men fight inner battles with their sinful nature. Lust, anger, selfishness, resentment, impatience, discontent, idolatry are just some of the forces that seek to overpower us as men. Many times we lose these battles for a simple reason—we are trying to fight them by ourselves.

On January 16, 103 pastors, elders, and other men’s ministry leaders attended the Reaching Every Man training led by PCA Men’s Ministry Consultant Gary Yagel at the Westminster Presbyterian Church in Lancaster, PA.  One enthusiastic participant commented, “I can’t remember ever gathering with one hundred men for anything, much less gathering with one hundred leaders to learn how to more effectively disciple men.”

Several graduates of RTS Orlando, along with a third PCA member, began to conduct extensive research into churches that were effectively discipling men, to determine why they were so successful. They saw time and again that the churches with effective long term processes that produced Godly disciples followed the same principles. For example, they targeted the hearts of men, not their behavior.
